August Francis Sherman was the chief registry clerk at Ellis Island in the early 1900s. He photographed incoming immigrants, and in 1907, National Geographic magazine published some of them. in 2016, artist Jordan Lloyd colorized many of these photos digitally, including the nine that appear here with the person's country of origin. Specialists reproduced historically accurate colors in order to bring to life the traditional clothing worn by immigrants who came through Ellis Island.
